The goal of these rules is to enhance the running of this event in a spirit of friendly competition and to ensure the safety of the participant.

Individual rules:

    1. NEW!! Headsets of any sort are not to be worn while running, i.e. IPODS, MP3 Players, etc.
    2. NEW!! There will not be a timer left for runners who cannot complete their leg in the allotted time. Their time will be that of the slowest runner of that leg plus 5 minutes. The time limit will be roughly equal to 6 min. per km. (9 min. 30 sec. per mile).
    3. NEW!! Headlamps are not to be worn while running.
    4. No bicycles to be used on the course during the race.
    5. Run on the left side of the road facing traffic.
    6. Step off the road for oncoming traffic.
    7. When the finish line is on the right, the runner must cross the road at as close to a 90-degree angle as possible to minimize danger to the runner and to minimize the number of vehicles being held for the runner.
    8. Pull off the road for water stops (or keep running).
    9. Run only for one team.
    10. Fun is encouraged, within the limits of safety.
    11. Lightsticks and reflective vests, supplied or approved by the Relay, must be used by runners for night legs. Team members supporting runners must wear reflective vests supplied by teams.

    Vehicle rules

    1. The team support vehicle must display an identification number provided by the Relay to monitor which vehicles are able to support their runners.
    2. UPDATED!! At 10 Minutes from Leg start, 20 teams will be allowed to leave. At 12 minutes another 20 teams will be allowed to leave, and at 14 minutes the remaining teams will be allowed. The teams, (for the 10, 15 and 20 minutes leaving times) will picked at the captains meeting and given identification. At 25 minutes after the leg start, the rest of the vehicles can leave. We found that this worked great last year and there were no traffic hang-ups. This actually gives at least 20 minutes when teams can interact and work on their scavenger hunt items.
    3. No vehicle shall be permitted to leave the start/finish area later than 10 minutes prior to the leg start time.
    4. Illumination of the road at night for the benefit of a runner is not permitted.
    5. Only one vehicle per team is permitted to accompany a runner during each leg. This vehicle must not pace the runner; it must stop in a safe place and pull off the road, service and support the runner and move on to another place to stop. All other vehicles must go to the end of the leg to wait for the runners to finish.
    6. Vehicles must have all four wheels off the road when stopped along the race course.

    Team rules

    1. NEW!! Relay observers must stay off the roadway. Walk or stand on the shoulder only.
    2. Teams are encouraged to have 17 runners for 17 legs.
    3. To cheer a runner, pull off the road. Use parking lights only at night.
    4. Penalties will be assessed for: (a) failure to start: leg’s slowest runner plus 10 min. (b) failure to finish: legs slowest runner plus 5 min. No penalty will be assessed if a team uses a runner from that team more than once.
    5. Teams cannot substitute one runner for another during the running of any leg - see Rule 3 (b) above for penalty.
    6. Runners for each leg must check in to start line 5 min. before the start of their leg.
    7. Do not pace a competing runner within 1 km. of the finish.
    8. Do not obstruct vehicle traffic.
    9. Pickup of a runner from the course is each team’s responsibility.
    10. Friday night Captain’s meeting is mandatory for all teams.
    11. NEW!! Teams shall not serve liquids to runners before the 10K mark in each leg.
    12. The Relay will provide water at the 5K mark.

    Infractions /Penalties Accumulation of 20 minutes earns disqualification.

    Don’t forget even if your team doesn’t earn enough time penalties to get disqualified the penalties are added to your total team race time.

    Definition of Disqualification

    • No further participation in race
    • No final results, previous legs eliminated from results.
    • Can attend reception, but eliminated from prizes and draws
    • Person who causes disqualification, as in flagrant incident, is suspended from next year's event

    Minor: 5 minutes

    • New!! Wearing a music headset.
    • Standing on road
    • Littering

    Serious: 10 minutes

    • Vehicle parked with wheels on road
    • Person not crossing road safely
    • Driving same speed as runner
    • Spraying water on moving vehicle
    • Throwing water or any object
    • Runner not crossing the road at as close to a 90-degree angle as possible when the finish line is on the right.
    • Supporting a runner with a vehicle that does not have a support vehicle identification number displayed.
    • Leaving the start/finish area during the vehicle movement freeze period.
    • Serving liquids to a runner before the 10K mark in each leg.

    Dangerous/illegal: 20 minutes

    • Vehicle not pulling over to the shoulder to let an emergency vehicle pass (either way).
    • Sitting out of vehicle windows.
    • Not running on left side of road
    • Not running in single file, causing unsafe traffic conditions for either runner or vehicle.
    • A runner not stepping off the road when there is oncoming traffic.
    • Anything the Relay consider serious enough to require this penalty.

    Minimum Age

    All runners must be 16 years of age or older on the day of the race.
